Ikea Breakfast, Sydney

From time to time, we have Saturday breakfasts at Ikea. For 2AUD, you’ll get a plate of freshly cooked bacon, sausage, hash browns, egg and tomato. Although it’s filling for such a cheap amount, we avoid going there frequently because if you notice in the photo, the food served are all fried.

Hooked to Steamed Food

I bought a steamer three years ago and it was only last week that I started using it. Good thing my friend brought us a huge pack of pork dumplings and ribs that ‘forced’ me to bring the steamer out of the box. Hi hi.

After steaming the first batch of pork dumplings, I realized how wonderful a kitchen gadget it is and how easy it is to use. Since then, steamed meat or fish are part of our weekly menu.

I tried steamed tilapia, too. Since I had planned to fry it, I didn’t have the all ingredients for this dish. But that didn’t stop me from preparing it the healthy way. So what I is:

  1. Clean the tilapia. Make sure every bit of scale is removed.
  2. Rub salt on the fish.
  3. Line the steamer (container) with aluminum foil. Foil should be large enough to wrap the fish.
  4. Pour light soya sauce. I used about 5 tablespoons.
  5. Put crushed garlic on the sauce.
  6. Place the fish in the foil and wrap.
  7. Steam for 40 minutes.
  8. Serve.

It tastes really good!  I’ll try it next time complete with spring onion, Chinese wine and gingeroot.  Pick-up the recipe here.

[WW] A Hearty Meal

One of our weekend family “traditions” is to have a hearty meal for breakfast (or “brekky” in OZ terminology).  Because during the work week, we’d almost always only have a bowl of cereals and a cup of steamy hot chocolate drink.

The meal in photo is one of the more popular breakfast foods in the Philippines.  It’s called TAPSILOG, which stands for TAP – Tapa or Beef strips; SI – Sinangag or Fried Rice and LOG – Itlog or Egg.  I haven’t tried curing beef for this meal but maybe one of these days I will.  We like this served with a steamy hot drink.  Yum!
